Tips, Advice & Aftercare

Going for the plunge with crazy colours can be a huge commitment with the upkeep it takes to take care of your hair colour. As purple is the weakest shade and washes out easily, here’s a breakdown of our personal tips, advice and ‘do’s and dont’s’ for maintaining and prolonging your new shade of purple without breaking the bank!

Tips

– Avoiding clarifying shampoos and conditioners which can strip the hair of your new hair colouring

– Only use hair products that are recommended by your stylist or those catered to your new vibrant hair colour

– Use a shampoo and conditioner which are catered to vibrant hair colours

– Using a hair oil such as Argan or Coconut oil to help protect your hair from breakage

– Use a leave-in conditioner once a week to help with the hair’s condition, especially when going for a more vibrant purple colour which can require pre-lightening

Aftercare Importance

The brightness and brilliance of hair colouring with purple relies on pre-lightening hair with highlights, dip-dyeing, or balayage all of which require bleach. Pastel shades of purple are easier to achieve on bleach and pre-lightened hair which can in turn dry the hair out. Using a good quality leave-in conditioner or treatment such as Olaplex can reverse these effects over time when used in conjunction with a committed nourishing hair care routine.
Purple shades that have lavender and undertones of blue can have some prolonged longevity on the hair and can help avoid the dreaded ‘wishy-washy’ look for a longer. Ultimately however, shades of this vibrancy do require quite a lot of up keep, and so regular visits to your salon are a must if you are looking to keep this colour for a long period of time. Having bright coloured hair, whether as a pastel or vibrant shade is a big commitment to keep looking fresh.

Davines: Minu Shampoo & Conditioner

Davines’ own Minu Shampoo and Conditioner from the Essential Haircare range is perfect for coloured hair, and has been specifically designed for this purpose. The Minu shampoo is designed to gently cleanse coloured hair and protect it from fading, keeping your hair shiny for a longer period of time. Minu Conditioner works in conjunction with the shampoo to moisturise the hair after washing to make it easier to untangle and protect the hair colour.
